In the late 1970s, the effectiveness in using acupuncture and Chinese medicine to treat dozens of common ailment was recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The theory behind acupuncture’s ability to treat pain and disease is based on an energy model of the human body, where vital energy, also known as Qi or Chi, flows through the body via specific pathways called meridians. Each meridian is associated with an internal organ, and pain or disease occurs in the body when there is a deficiency or an imbalance of the energy in the meridians. The insertion of a very fine needle into one of the acupuncture points — which are specific locations along the meridians — has a very predictable effect on the energy that passes through that point, thus restoring the balance of meridians in the body.
Modern research has shown that acupuncture has the ability to increase circulation, reduce inflammation and trigger the release of endorphins — the body’s own “feel-good” pain-relieving chemicals, and therefore proves the effectiveness of using acupuncture to relieve various types of pain — such as migraines/headaches, stiffness, arthritis, sciatica, back pain and menstrual pain — as well as low energy, depression, insomnia, moenopause/hot flushes/irritability, digestive imbalances, weight loss/detoxification, natural fertility and IVF support.
